Fast Girls - Nightclub Scene
Mise-en-scene:
Location/Setting: The scene is set in a nightclub and also shows a tunnel through which the girls run. They are in the nightclub for a girl's night out when they come across a gang of boys that try chatting Lisa up. The girls defend Lisa but wind up the boys so they are forced to run away from them as they are chased in heels. It is dark and cold outside as it is early morning and not many people are around. I think they chose this setting because the girls are still dressed up and running and full of energy although its cold outside and it is late. It shows they are putting in effort to be with each other outside of training which makes us think they are a better team as they are bonding.
Props: The main prop we come across in the scene is the glass full of drink that Lisa poured on the guy after Shania backed her up. The glass showed Lisa being a bit more rebellious, standing up for herself but it also helped build Lisa and Shania's friendship after their many arguments in the past.
Costumes, Hair and Make-up: Usually we see the girls with their hair tied up, with no make up on and in gym clothes. However, on their night out we see them wearing dresses and heels with their hair and make-up done. I think their change in appearance also represents their change of mood and attitude towards one another. As soon as they put more effort into themselves, they put more effort into each other and into being a better team. A big part of their costumes were their heels. Obviously, the girls were dressed up and having fun but as soon as they took their heels off and started running, that's when they really enjoyed themselves. Also, the girls' costumes were different depending on their character so Lisa was wearing a playsuit to show she's kind of higher class whereas Shania was wearing a crop top and jeans which shows she's more middle class but when they took their heels off, we realize that although they might be individually different, they all have their love for running in common.
Facial Expressions and Body Language: Their facial expressions when they are being chased are important because although the other 3 girls are laughing, Lisa looks kind of worried and continues to look back. From this, we can infer that Lisa is perhaps slightly out of her comfort zone or that she has never really gone out or had an adrenaline rush outside of training but the girls are helping her have fun.
Cinematography:
The camera follows the girls as they are running to show movement and to create a sense of speed, agility and excitement. Also, the camera often zooms in on Shania and Lisa to create a more intimate 2 person middle shot, This shot shows that there is a relationship building, not only between the whole team but between Shania and Lisa too. This is important to the storyline and this shot represents development as a team. We see the camera zoom in on their heels often to, in a way, show how they represent restrictions. Each of the girls have things that hold them back or stop them from being happy and as soon as they forget about them (the equivalence to taking your heels off), they are free to run. Lastly, when the girls are walking to the next club, the camera goes into another medium shot to show the 4 girls and how much closer they've become.
