How do Modern Hollywood film posters differ from Film Noir? Film Noir posters are mainly in black and white with some red details but modern Hollywood posters use a variety of colours, depending on the genre of the film. Also, the male and female representations in film noir posters are very different. In film noir, we see a seductive and feminine 'Femme Fatale' as the main woman but in modern Hollywood, this is not always the case. Females tend to look stronger and powerful especially in action movies. Also, males are shown to be drunk and foolish in the 'doomed hero' representation often used in film noir, but in modern Hollywood, male representations are varied; there are strong, manly, macho males, there are jokers, villains, nerds and all of these depend on the genre of the film and the actor. Another difference between the two are the conventions; for example film noir posters tend to include shadows, Venetian blinds, smoke, cigars and guns. Whereas in modern Hollywood, you don't really have conventions because every poster is different depending on genre.
My genre and how I intend to portray this in my poster I chose a romantic comedy for my film poster genre because it's one of my personal favourites and I feel like it's a good representation of modern Hollywood as many films are about love. I also felt like it would be a good contrast to my film noir poster. I intend to portray my genre in my poster through a bright and romantic colour scheme(yellow, pink, green, red) and fun, lively fonts. The main thing I'm going to use to show my genre is the main image. I will do this by making sure my models' body language is welcoming and that they look like they're in love. To convey the comedic part of my film genre I will take pictures of them laughing and think of a funny tagline. Another thing I will do is use a romantic, happy background to show that it is a funny and positive movie. I would also consider using cheesy/cliche things in my poster to emphasise the romance but also to mock it which would be comedic.
